Poker Tells
How to Read your Opponents and Improve your Game
By gopoker.com, May 27, 2010
Understanding the concept of bluffing, and foremost when to bluff and when not, is one of the basics of the game and it need to be part of your strategy.
A skill most good poker players have is the ability to read their opponents, and that is why you hear about poker tells. In brief "poker tells” is a physical reaction, and or behaviour, or habit that gives other players (tells) information about what you are holding.
Improving your game means learning the most common tells, and analysing your behaviour you can not only watch your own "tells", but you also need to watch for habits and tics and tells in other players at the table, and the short of it is that if you can read your opponent’s tells, you will be able to take better decisions and win more often.
Tics and Tells Every player has their own thing, unique tics and tells, and once you learn what to look for it’s quite entertaining to watch players and pick up on their unique tics and tells. Even in the best players there is commonly a few involuntary tells that you can watch for. Even the first time you sit down with someone there are often small give aways. As a general rule, when a player acts strong, he is probably weak, and when acting weak, he is probably holding a really strong hand.
I Have a Good and Strong Hand Players acting uninterested in a hand, while still in it. Usually this is a sign of a strong hand. The player is pretending not to be excited about his cards, while in fact he or she is the opposite.
Nervous and Shaky Hands During a hand, and if you notice that a player’s hands are shaking or acting nervous, as they are placing their bet, they probably has gotten a really really good hand.
Fast or Uneven Breath Players that is aware of their tells can control nervous and shaking hands, but it's harder to control the automatic breath, as the heart rate goes up on pocket aces or hitting the flush on the flop. If you can detect breathing speed and whether changing, often they have an excellent hand.
Sighing and Shrugging Player that show sighing or shrugging, trying appear uninterested and comments with things like “I guess I’ll call,” or even “I don't really know why am I calling” etc. he or she is most likely putting on a show, overacting trying to hide a big hand.
Looking at Chips after Looking at Hole Cards When a player looks down and sees strong hole or pocket cards, he or she may take a look at their chips to see just how much they can bet, hence be aware as it is possibly a strong hand in the making.
I Have a Weak Hand If an opponent is staring you down, he or she is most likely trying to represent strength. Usually though, they hold a weak hand, even though it may be decent cards, often it’s something that can be beaten or pushed into a fold during the game.
Holding their Breath Often, inexperienced players will hold their breath if they are bluffing, i.e. trying to appear strong on a weak hand they freeze in an attempt to control not giving up a tell.
I Have a Drawing Hand If the flop shows the possibility of giving someone a flush or straight draw, watch for players that checks their hole cards after the flop. Commonly they are checking to see if they have the hand. Regardless of the flop, they are not likely to have a flush or straight at that point, if they did, they would not have to check, instead they are likely to check whether they has a draw to it.
Taking too Long Before Calling a Bet When a player looks into the pot and appears to do head calculations (probably is), they most likely are figuring out the pot odds to see if it’s worth it, i.e. trying to catch the cards needed to complete drawing a hand.
Alright Got it, Let's Play No, go easy, play but don't change your game style thinking that you can now read tics and tells, it will take some time to master and remember experienced players may give off false tells, so the first thing to read about other players is if they are beginners or pro players.
Poker is a game of decisions, and the right decisions separates winners from losers.
